GOV UK One Login is a secure authentication tool developed by the UK government. This Android app provides access to various services. It allows users to prove their identity online via biometric verification.

The app is primarily designed to replace multiple government login systems, such as the Government Gateway. It offers two-factor authentication options, so users can receive security codes via text message or specialized utilities.
The main function of the utility is as an identity verification tool. It allows for matching the user’s face to their official photo ID. Different IDs are supported, including:
- UK passports;
- non-UK passports with biometric chips;
- UK biometric residence permits;
- UK photocard driving licences;
- biometric residence cards;
- UK Frontier Worker permits.
However, certain expired biometric residence permits and cards can be used up to 18 months after expiration. The utility requires a smartphone with a camera. iPhone 6s or newer and Android 10 or higher devices are supported.
How it works
It is possible to sign in to the app with your GOV.UK One Login credentials. The utility links to the GOV.UK website for identity proofing. The verification process includes:
- photographing the selected photo ID;
- scanning the biometric chip;
- performing a facial scan to confirm that the user is the same person as on the ID.
This multi-step identification checks the authenticity of the ID and the user’s person.
Currently, GOV UK One Login supports access to a lot of government services, such as applying for an HM Armed Forces Veteran Card, import or export licenses, teaching qualifications, social worker registration, apprenticeship services, passport cancellation, driving condition checks, childcare offers in Wales, compensation claims for violent crime victims, and many more. Users can also manage their account, change sign-in details, view accessed services, or delete the profile if desired.
